On the Issues
Educational Opportunity
All children deserve the opportunity for a quality education. With today’s changing economy, we must ensure that youth, but especially girls and students from low income communities, have access to Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs, so they can be prepared for the careers of the future. Our students need to be equipped to succeed in college or for careers that pay a living wage. We must make college affordable instead of saddling young people with burdensome debt.
Economic Vitality
The only way to solve income inequality is to create more high wage jobs. I will work to diversify our local economy and bring more high wage jobs. As a small business owner, I run a business and meet a payroll. I will be a strong advocate for local small businesses, cutting red tape and unnecessary regulation. The cost of housing is out of reach for too many people. We must provide incentives to build affordable housing and increase the range of options for young people, families and seniors.
Affordable Healthcare
As a military service member, my family was the beneficiary of a universal healthcare system. My wife, who also was a service member, served as a healthcare administrator. I was able to see firsthand how a universal healthcare system can be effectively operated to increase the overall health of a community. We need to lower the skyrocketing costs of healthcare and prescription drug prices. I will defend the Affordable Care Act while working to expand access to healthcare in California.
Safe Communities
As a former Federal Prosecutor, I understand what it takes to keep our communities safe. We need more funding for community policing and to put an end to senseless gun violence in our communities.
Serving as the Deputy United States Drug Czar appointed by President Clinton, I have a deep understanding of the strategies and resources needed to stop the current opioid epidemic, which is killing thousands of people every day in communities across California.
Veterans Services
I know firsthand the kinds of sacrifices our military men and women make. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication to keep our nation safe. In the State Senate, I will be a champion for our veterans, ensuring they have access to education, job training, healthcare and affordable housing.
