Small Business and Consumer Protection

  • Founded and built a veteran-owned law firm in Orange County, with firsthand experience making payroll, managing employees, and navigating complex regulations

  • Earned a 100% voting record with Planned Parenthood across multiple legislative sessions

  • Consistently defended access to reproductive healthcare and patient autonomy
  • Secured $12.2 million to protect family planning services when federal funding was cut

LGBTQ Equality

  • Earned a 100% voting record with Equality California across multiple legislative sessions
  • Cast the decisive vote to advance same-sex marriage in California, knowing it would cost him politically
  • Stepped in when LGBTQ students and educators were targeted, helping reverse discriminatory policies
  • Advocated for equality and protections for LGBTQ Californians throughout his legislative career

Mental Health and Addiction Treatment

  • Authored CARE Court, connecting people with severe mental illness and addiction to treatment and support
  • Expanded protections so people can report overdoses without fear of arrest

  • Consistent 90%+ voting record with the California Labor Federation across multiple sessions
  • 100% voting record with United Food and Commercial Workers
  • 100% voting record with California Federation of Teachers
  • 100% voting record with California School Employees Association across multiple sessions
  • Backed policies that protect workers, wages, and retirement security
  • Helped public employees and veterans receive retirement credit for military service

Veterans

  • Led anti-corruption operations in Afghanistan as a U.S. Army Colonel and was awarded the Bronze Star
  • Expanded access to legal services for veterans
  • Secured funding for the Southern California Veterans Cemetery

Public Safety and Accountability

  • 100% conviction rate as a federal criminal prosecutor — tried over 100 cases including white-collar crime, government fraud, IRS fraud, civil rights violations, and protection of employee pension funds
  • Authored legislation voiding public contracts formed through bribery of government officials
  • Passed legislation to crack down on catalytic converter theft and illegal auto dismantling
  • Authored gun trafficking legislation making it a crime to import firearms for illegal transfer
